Yeah, the Zero series is brutally hard, but I think a good chunk of that difficulty would disappear if the sprites were smaller. Getting S ranks was more about level memorization/muscle memory than about developing skill and reflexes.
In regards to the Zero series camera mechanic, I can't tell you how many times I cursed during Zero 1 because of that. Would it be safe to assume that X4 is the upper limit for how much screen space a player character can take up in a MM-type game, or is it really the way the screen moves that makes the difference? The size difference between X4 & 7 seem to be trivial, with MM7 being shorter, but a little wider. In order from smallest sprites to biggest that I've seen:Ĭonsidering the amount of praise X4 always seems to get (especially compared to 5 & 6) & out of all the criticisms I've seen of it, oversized sprites have never been one of them. This isn't the most scientific comparison ever, but it's good enough for me. Just for fun, I decided to compare the width & height of the different standing/shooting sprites to the size of the screens of the games they're from. The same could also be said of MM7, yet why is it I've never seen complaints about Zero being too big in those games when Mega Man is too big in MM7?
I figured this was due to how the camera lets the sprite get too close to the edge of the screen before moving with it, especially vertical movement. I've been playing through the Zero series recently & I couldn't tell if it was just bad level design, but it seems like in Zero 3, every time I get hurt it's because something pops-in from the edge of the screen & I've got no time to dodge it since Zero is practically inside it by the time I notice. I don't know if it's part of some really obscure in-joke or what, but I don't remember it ever bothering me when I played. One of the first criticisms that seem to pop-up when looking-up Mega Man 7 is that the sprites are too big.
